32gb Flash
Today, our main data storage devices are mechanical hard disks. These hard disks were magnetic disks that were spun by little motors and then read by mechanical heads. The read and write speed of data depended on the number of read/write heads as well as the speed at which the individual magnetic disks spun. However, these hard disks’ capabilities are seriously limited since they are mechanical. They will soon be replaced by a technology that is rapidly taking over the data storage market. This technology is flash memory.
Flash memory was first introduced to us in the form of USB drives. When they first came into the market, these drives had capacities as small as 32megabytes. Soon, however, this multiplied and increased into capacities holding gigabytes of data. The convenience of this technology was so great that it started making technologies such as SATA hard disks and CDs seem obsolete. When the capacity of one of these drives came into the range of 4gigabytes they even started to be used as back-up devices instead of the usual DVDs.
Flash memory went on further and came out in 8gigabyte models. This was ideal as it now had the capacity of a dual layer DVD. This made it possible for large files to be portable and safe at the same time. It was also much faster than having to burn CDs or DVDs. Also they had an added advantage or being reusable in just a few clicks. Even re-writable DVDs did not stand a chance against USB drives.
Now, this technology has been taken a step further. With developments of 32gb flash memory, this type of data storage now has potential to take over traditional hard disks completely. 32gb flash memory is already being used in some electronic devices such as Apple’s iPod touch and their iPhone. What makes 32gb flash memory in these devices convenient is that it helps make the devices lighter, while improving their performance significantly. An ordinary hard disk would affect the response time on these devices greatly.
32gb flash memory is also now being used in small laptops, especially in net books. The 32gb flash memory supports the idea of a net book with its light weight, yet offers the user of a net book sufficient space for data storage. 32gb flash memory is almost as twice as fast as a normal hard disk, which is ideal for people who are constantly transferring data. Another advantage of 32gb flash memory is that it consumes less power than a traditional mechanical hard disk. This can increase the battery life of a net book by quite a bit.
